From forge to holiday cottages

Stay in a place with a story,
on the banks of the Armançon.

La Petite Forge takes its name from its industrial past. In the 18th century, Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, combined his research into nature with experiments on iron and heat. In Buffon, the river, timber and iron ore provided the resources needed for this work.

The cottages that welcome you today were once the workers’ homes. The forge master’s house became the family home. Cross the bridge and you can still see the remains of the building where metal was worked.

The weir holds back some of the Armançon’s water and directs it into the millrace running through the property. This water power drove the machinery: water turned the wheels, which transferred their movement to the equipment. Today’s peace has taken the place of the workshop’s noise.

La Petite Forge and La Grande Forge are two separate places. La Grande Forge, which you can visit in the village, is a fine way to explore this heritage further.

Buffon, naturalist and forge master

Observe, understand,
experiment.

Buffon, born in Montbard in 1707, died in Paris in 1788. He was the author ofHistoire naturelle. As superintendent of the Jardin du Roi, he developed collections that form part of the history of France’s National Museum of Natural History.

His research went well beyond books. He explored the properties of metals, their cooling and their transformation. The forges were part of this world of observation and experimentation.

In Montbard, the Musée Buffon and Parc Buffon offer a chance to learn more. A digital information point also explores his life and work.

A family home for generations

Growing up here.
Welcoming you here.

Antoine grew up at La Petite Forge, on this property restored by his parents. The family has welcomed guests to its cottages since 1992.

The houses have kept their character: stone walls, beams, rooms to gather in and terraces for outdoor living. Guests come with family or friends, for a few days or for their holidays.

The two cottages adjoin, but each has its own space. They can be rented separately or together: the small cottage sleeps 4 in its bedrooms, with 2 additional places in the living room, and the large cottage sleeps 9.

Three hectares beside the water

A garden full of life.

The river, the millrace, the trees and their inhabitants are part of your stay.

Greenery along the water at La Petite Forge

The three hectares of wooded grounds invite you to walk, read, watch the water or simply do nothing. From the banks, observe the birds, reflections and changing seasons.

The property is a wildlife refuge registered with the Ligue pour la protection des oiseaux. This care for living things sets the tone: take time to watch without disturbing the animals or their shelters.

The Armançon has many moods: calm in summer, sometimes powerful in winter. Rowing boat trips and time by the water should be planned around the day’s conditions and the advice given on arrival.

By the water or in the garden, they wander at their own pace. An invitation to slow down, for young and old alike.

At Le Prieuré, you may also meet Mona, our Labrador, and Yuzu, our Akita Inu. Please let each animal approach you in its own time.

An extraordinary garden.
